Purley Side Extension with a Green Roof

A sculptural side kitchen extension with a green roof conceals itself into the sloping site of this 1930’s Purley house.

The clients came to us, seeking a functional solution to the steep gradients of their front driveway and rear garden (a characteristic of many Purely houses), making it difficult to fully utilize their outdoor space.

Replacing the dangerously steep slope of the existing driveway, the new flat driveway creates a much safer parking space, drastically improving the accessibility of the house and offering a new EV charging point and bin store.

The landscaping design responds to the site topography, creating safe, functional spaces that follow the sloping ground. Stepped planting allows for much improved biodiversity to the front lawn, as well as offering spots for growing fruit and vegetables.

The materiality roots the development into the sloping Purely landscape seamlessly; The green roof above the kitchen, gives the impression of a lawn when viewed from the front of the property while the driveway is bordered by a gabion wall to one side.

A new brick enclosure is proposed to stretch across the full width of the house, which will limit solar gain to the large areas of glazing to the rear.
