This side extension and landscape project transformed a challenging sloping site in Purley, improving both the house and the way the family uses it every day.
Like many homes in Purley, the property sits on a steep plot. The existing driveway was difficult to navigate and reversing onto the road had become a daily frustration. The family wanted a safer and more practical solution, while also taking the opportunity to improve the ground floor of the house.
Our design reworked the levels across the site, creating a new driveway, improved access and a series of landscaped terraces that make better use of the sloping garden. The project also introduced a side extension that enlarges the kitchen, bringing in natural light through a large rooflight and creating a more generous family space.
A green roof helps the extension blend into the landscape, giving the impression of a continuation of the garden when viewed from above. Carefully selected materials, including brick, planting and gabion walls, help root the design within its setting while improving biodiversity across the site.
The result is a Purley home that feels easier to live in, with safer access, a brighter kitchen and outdoor spaces that finally work with the landscape rather than against it.
