This rear extension and full house refurbishment transformed an Arts and Crafts-inspired home in Beckenham, creating a warm and contemporary family space that remains connected to the character of the original house.
The family wanted a brighter and more sociable layout, bringing together the kitchen, dining and living spaces while maintaining a connection to a separate study. Large glazed doors between the two spaces provide flexibility, allowing family life to remain connected while supporting quieter moments when needed.
The defining design move was the geometry of the extension itself. Rather than extending directly towards a neighbouring property, the rear elevation is angled to capture the most open views of the garden and create a greater sense of privacy. This subtle move shapes both the architecture and the experience of the space.
Natural materials were central to the design. Exposed timber, bespoke joinery and tactile finishes bring warmth and character throughout the interior, creating a contemporary home that feels crafted rather than minimal. Large areas of glazing and a new rooflight above the stair fill the house with natural light, transforming what was previously a dark and constrained interior.
The result is a Beckenham family home that feels bright, welcoming and deeply connected to its surroundings, balancing contemporary living with the warmth and character of its Arts and Crafts roots.
