This rear extension and internal renovation transformed a substantial family home in Sanderstead, replacing a cold, outdated conservatory with a bright and sociable space designed for modern family life.
Rather than opening up the entire rear elevation, the design carefully balances glazing and solid walls to create a more comfortable and practical living environment. A central sliding door frames views of the garden, while large windows either side bring natural light deep into the home and create places to sit, gather and relax.
A continuous piece of bespoke joinery forms the heart of the project. Incorporating a generous dining banquette, integrated storage and a concealed door leading to the study, it helps organise the open-plan space while creating opportunities for family meals and entertaining.
Large steel-framed glazed doors allow the reception room to be opened up for parties and gatherings or closed off for quieter moments. Throughout the project, materials were chosen to complement the original house, creating a contemporary extension that feels naturally connected to the existing architecture.
The result is a bright and flexible Sanderstead family home that feels more connected, more sociable and far better suited to everyday life.
