This full house renovation and two-storey extension transformed a 1930s home in Norbury for the next generation of family life, carefully balancing contemporary living with the character of the original house.
Having been owned by the same family for many years, the house held a strong sense of history and personality. The brief was not to reinvent it completely, but to create additional space while celebrating the architectural features that made it special.
A two-storey rear extension and side dormer extension provide additional accommodation, including a new bedroom and en-suite, while the ground floor was reconfigured to create a more connected and practical layout. Throughout the project, original features were restored and reinterpreted, from timber detailing and panelling to traditional joinery and period-inspired finishes.
Curves became a recurring theme throughout the design, reflecting forms already present within the original architecture. Arched openings, curved windows and soft detailing create a visual language that runs through the house, linking old and new in a cohesive way.
The kitchen forms the heart of the home, with a window bench and bespoke joinery creating spaces for gathering, relaxing and everyday family life. Bold colours and carefully selected patterns reflect the family’s personality while remaining sympathetic to the heritage of the house.
The result is a Norbury family home that feels both familiar and renewed — preserving the warmth and character of the original property while providing the space and comfort needed for modern living.
