St Albans Garage Conversion

This project transforms a 1980s St Albans house through internal reconfiguration, a garage conversion, and a small rear extension to create a unique and modern open-plan space—achieved without significantly increasing the building’s footprint.

A series of individually articulated yet interconnected spaces allow the clients, an adventurous couple with lively children, to coexist comfortably within the same home. The kitchen and dining area span the full length of one side of the house, centred around a new L-shaped kitchen island that responds cleverly to the space’s awkwardly narrow proportions.

The existing house transitions seamlessly into the new garage conversion via a large rooflight spanning its full length. This dramatic contemporary feature floods the interior with light and serves as a striking introduction to the new extension.

At the rear, a large oriel window with an integrated window seat becomes the focal point of the extension, drawing the eye toward the garden while creating a playful spot for the children to sit and play.

Integrated storage solutions are thoughtfully incorporated into the design. The walls and window seat conceal ample storage for toys, blending seamlessly with the architecture. Full-height wall panels open to reveal hidden storage and discreet access to the utility room and the reduced-size garage space.
