St Albans Bungalow Conversion

A Contemporary Transformation: Breathing New Life into a 1960s Suburban Bungalow.

This project reimagines a 1960s suburban bungalow, transforming it into a vibrant and modern family home that combines playful natural materials, tall, light-filled spaces, and integrated plywood storage showcasing the clients’ cherished collections of African art, fashion, and records.

Seeking a simpler life in St Albans after leaving their large London townhouse, the clients prioritized spaciousness without expanding the bungalow’s footprint. Cherry Architects proposed exposing the roof line to create a double height space in the centre of the house, enhancing the sense of space.

To optimize the limited floor area, existing circulation space was reconfigured. The original central hallway was removed to enlarge the habitable rooms, and the entrance was relocated to the side garage. The new entrance, highlighted by larch and aluminium materials, creates a bold focal point, contrasting with the previous understated entryway.

The living room and kitchen form a cohesive, open-plan space designed for both large gatherings and intimate moments. Sliding glass doors enable the spaces to function independently when needed. Expansive glazing frames views of the St Albans countryside, immersing the living area in natural light and a sense of connection to the outdoors.​

The main bedroom suite, accessed via a beautifully crafted plywood staircase, offers a serene and ceremonial entry. The “bird’s nest” dressing room features a panoramic screen overlooking the double-height living area and rooflights that provide views of the countryside and London’s distant skyline.

Downstairs, three bedrooms are tucked discreetly behind a private door near the staircase, ensuring privacy and comfort for family members or guests.

Externally, the bungalow conversion has been completely modernised with white render and timber cladding.
