This project involved the creation of two double rear extensions for neighbouring properties within the Dulwich Estate Conservation Area—a challenging endeavour due to strict material guidelines and height restrictions imposed by neighbour concerns.
Both rear extensions were designed with zinc cladding, a material permitted within the Estate’s regulations, innovatively used to wrap the roof and front façade, resulting in a distinctive and modern aesthetic.
The project highlighted the contrasting aspirations of the two households. For Number 9, the focus was on creating an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area by removing the rear wall. The design embraced a sleek, contemporary style with large sliding doors and a cohesive modern interior.
In contrast, Number 8 sought a more traditional addition to their home—a new dining space that blended seamlessly with the original Dulwich architecture. To honour these differences, the transitional details became a feature of the design: architraves and door openings on the traditional side were designed to echo the home’s existing character, while the new extension introduced crisp, modern lines.
Both rear extensions feature expansive roof lights to flood the interiors with natural light, designed carefully to respect the privacy of surrounding homes. Although limited in size, the south-facing orientation allows sunlight to create beautiful patterns across the walls throughout the day.
This project successfully balanced modern innovation with respect for the Dulwich Estate Conservation Area’s heritage and the unique preferences of the clients, delivering two distinctive yet harmonious extensions that complement their surroundings.
