This extension and full house renovation transformed a dated 1970s house in South Croydon into a contemporary family home designed around light, space and a stronger connection to the garden.
Despite its wide frontage, the original house was surprisingly shallow, limiting the number of bedrooms and making the internal layout feel constrained. The family wanted more space upstairs while creating a generous open-plan living environment on the ground floor.
Following extensive discussions with the local authority, the design combines a first-floor extension, rear extension and front extension to maximise the site’s potential while remaining sensitive to the surrounding street. The ground floor was completely reconfigured, creating a clear visual connection from the front door through to the garden beyond. Large areas of glazing and carefully framed views allow natural light and greenery to become part of the everyday experience of the house.
Upstairs, vaulted ceilings create a greater sense of volume within the bedrooms, while a mezzanine level transforms one room into a playful and adaptable space for a growing child. Throughout the home, carefully considered details help the house feel larger, brighter and more connected to nature.
Long-format Roman brickwork gives the extension its distinctive character, creating a contemporary contrast to the original building while helping the new additions feel grounded and permanent.
The result is a South Croydon family home that feels almost unrecognisable from the house that stood before — a complete transformation that provides the space, flexibility and character needed for modern family life.
