This extension and full refurbishment transforms a substantial detached home in the Keston Park conservation area, creating a light-filled family house that balances contemporary living with the character and expectations of its conservation area setting.

Located within one of Bromley’s most prestigious conservation areas, the property sits amongst large detached houses set within mature landscaped gardens. The challenge was to create additional space while ensuring the architecture remains sympathetic to its surroundings. Rather than introducing a contrasting contemporary addition, the two-storey rear extension was carefully designed to complement the scale, proportions and character of the existing house.

Having previously renovated a home within the Webb Estate Conservation Area, our clients were drawn to the elegance and formality of traditional architecture. The brief centred on creating a home for a large extended family while introducing a greater sense of quality, comfort and longevity throughout the property.

A key part of the design involved completely reimagining the entrance sequence. The original hallway and staircase felt dark and disconnected, limiting natural light through the centre of the house. By relocating the staircase and introducing a dramatic double-height space, daylight can be drawn deep into the plan, creating visual connections between floors and establishing a new focal point at the heart of the home.

The new feature staircase is the focal point of the entrance hall, situated adjacent to passenger lift, future-proofing the house while creating a sense of arrival that was previously missing. Throughout the refurbishment, bespoke joinery, carefully considered detailing and updated interiors were used to bring warmth and character to the house, making the most of existing architectural features such as the bay windows.

The result is a Keston family home that feels brighter, more spacious and better connected, combining traditional character with the comfort and flexibility needed for modern family life.
