Modern living in a Victorian frame..
This side-return extension to a Victorian terraced house in Forest Hill transforms a previously narrow and disconnected ground floor into a bright, sociable family space.
The key move was to extend into the side return and introduce a glazed roof that brings natural light deep into the plan. Exposed London stock brickwork inside mirrors the original exterior, softening the transition between old and new and adding warmth to the clean, contemporary palette of concrete-effect floor tiles and dark timber cabinetry.
At the heart of the new kitchen is a generous island and a dedicated coffee point—concealed behind pocket doors that slide into the unit when open, and allow the counter to double as a prep or serving space. A built-in window seat offers garden views and hidden storage beneath, inviting pause and conversation.
Glazed steel doors were added between the front reception and hallway, bringing light and visibility across the plan while preserving traditional proportions. Pocket sliding doors between the living and dining rooms offer flexibility—closing off spaces for quiet or opening up for gatherings.
