This side return extension transformed a Victorian terraced house in Forest Hill, creating a brighter and more flexible family home without significantly increasing its footprint.
The young family were happy with much of the existing layout, but the kitchen felt narrow and restrictive. Rather than extending across the rear, the decision was made to focus on the side return, adding just enough width to create a more sociable and functional space.
A fully glazed roof brings natural light deep into the plan, while a built-in window seat provides views of the garden and additional storage. The existing kitchen was carefully adapted rather than replaced, allowing space for a larger island and a bespoke coffee station concealed behind pocket doors.
Elsewhere, steel-framed glazed doors and pocket sliding doors improve the flow of light throughout the house while providing flexibility between the living, dining and play spaces. Exposed London stock brickwork, dark timber cabinetry and concrete-effect floor tiles create a warm and contemporary material palette.
The result is a Forest Hill family home that feels brighter, more spacious and better connected, demonstrating how a modest side return extension can completely transform the way a house works.
