This rear extension transformed a compact family home in Beckenham, creating a brighter and more connected living space designed around everyday family life.
The existing ground floor felt constrained, with a small kitchen and limited connection to the garden. Working within a modest budget, the brief was to create a more sociable home that would maximise natural light and provide a stronger relationship between inside and outside.
The design introduces a rear extension containing a generous open-plan kitchen and dining space, creating a natural focal point for family life. Large bi-fold doors open directly onto the garden, allowing the living space to expand outdoors during the warmer months while bringing daylight deep into the plan throughout the year.
Externally, dark-stained timber cladding gives the extension a distinctive identity, creating a striking contrast with the white rendered house. A green roof softens the addition when viewed from above and helps integrate the architecture into the surrounding garden.
Although modest in scale, the extension has a transformative impact on the way the house functions. Careful planning and simple interventions create a greater sense of space, improving circulation and allowing the family to make better use of both the house and garden.
The result is a bright and welcoming Beckenham family home that demonstrates how thoughtful design can deliver significant change within a compact footprint and modest budget.
