This side return extension and loft conversion transformed an Edwardian-style house in Addiscombe into a bright, colourful and highly personal family home.
The existing house felt dark and disconnected, with the kitchen leading to a rear bathroom and little connection to the garden beyond. Our clients wanted a home that felt open and light-filled while reflecting their love of colour, character and family life.
The design centred on opening up the ground floor through a side return extension, creating a generous kitchen, dining and family space at the rear of the house. Rooflights and large glazed openings bring natural light deep into the plan, while a generous window seat provides a place to relax and enjoy views of the garden.
Carefully framed views and new openings maintain a sense of structure throughout the home. The kitchen acts as the heart of the house, while the front reception room was transformed into a dedicated cinema room, creating separate spaces for different activities.
Colour plays an important role throughout the project. A calm, light kitchen contrasts with bold interiors elsewhere, from the colour-drenched cinema room to the playful family bathroom and bespoke joinery details.
The result is a bright and welcoming Addiscombe family home that celebrates individuality while providing the space, light and flexibility needed for modern family living.
