This rear extension transformed a traditional terraced house in Tooting, creating a bright open-plan kitchen and living space designed around light, height and family life.
The existing layout no longer reflected how the family wanted to live. The kitchen felt disconnected from the rest of the house, while the rear rooms lacked the openness and natural light needed for modern family living. Located within a dense residential street, the challenge was to create a greater sense of space without compromising privacy.
Our design centred on a dramatic clerestory roof that brings daylight deep into the heart of the home. Rising above the kitchen, the vaulted form draws the eye upwards and creates a striking sense of volume, transforming the experience of the space. Carefully positioned glazing captures views of surrounding trees while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties.
The full-width rear extension creates a seamless kitchen and living area, allowing the family to spend more time together while enjoying a stronger connection to the garden. Throughout the day, sunlight moves across the space, creating changing patterns of light and shadow that bring warmth and character to the interior.
Externally, zinc standing seam cladding gives the extension a distinctive identity, while internally a rich palette of colour, texture and carefully considered materials creates a welcoming atmosphere.
The result is a Tooting house extension that feels far larger than its footprint suggests, using light, height and carefully framed views to transform everyday family life.
