This proposed rear extension and full house renovation reimagines a compact terraced house in East Dulwich, creating a bright and highly functional family home through careful spatial planning rather than significant increases in floor area.
Like many Victorian terraces, the existing house is constrained by a series of small, disconnected rooms and an inefficient layout that no longer reflects modern family life. The brief is to transform the property into a practical long-term family home while making the most of a tight urban site.
The design centres on a single-storey rear extension that will create a generous kitchen and dining space with a stronger connection to the garden. Alongside the extension, the entire house is being reconfigured to improve circulation, increase natural light and make better use of the available footprint.
Through a series of carefully considered interventions, the proposal will transform the property from a modest two-bedroom house into a three-bedroom family home with three bathrooms.
Bespoke joinery and integrated storage are incorporated throughout, ensuring every part of the house works as efficiently as possible.
Rather than relying on additional floor area, the design focuses on unlocking the potential of the existing building. Open sightlines, improved layouts and carefully positioned glazing will create a greater sense of space and light throughout the home.
The result will be an East Dulwich family home that feels brighter, more spacious and better suited to contemporary living, demonstrating how thoughtful design can completely transform a compact urban terrace.
